Carbon capture: decarbonization through CO2 removal

Bad Homburg, 2/27/2025

At a time when the 1.5-degree target of the Paris Climate Agreement is being exceeded, it is more urgent than ever to reduce greenhouse gas emissions - especially carbon dioxide (CO2), which is the main cause of global warming. In this context, carbon capture technology offers promising approaches by removing carbon dioxide from the atmosphere and storing it.

In principle, carbon capture opens up attractive growth opportunities. However, its implementation is associated with major challenges: high costs, enormous energy requirements and potential environmental risks.

While proponents see the technology as indispensable for achieving climate targets, critics warn against its use as a pretext for delaying the phase-out of fossil fuels.

This analysis highlights the opportunities and risks of this technology and examines how political developments could influence the market in the future. It can be downloaded in German from the download section of this page.
